Leeds Music College Composition Project

Wednesday 22 June @ 3.30pm

Shout Out volunteers will meet with musical artist and composer Lilly Ison to debate and discuss mental health and stigma. Lilly will record and research the information she is provided with by Shout Out and then compose a short musical piece to represent her findings.

This new music will be premiered at the Head Space Showcase on Thursday 13 October at the Leeds Music College – this event is part of the wider Love Arts Festival that takes place in Leeds every year during October

Yorkshire and Humberside Young People’s Emotional and Mental Health Event

Saturday 9 April saw us; the Shout Out volunteers and facilitator, attend the Yorkshire and Humberside Young People’s Emotional and Mental Well Being event.

The event was held at Horizon in Leeds, so was really local for us and easy to access – which was great!

We arrived just after 10.30am to register and to set up our small Shout Out ‘stall’ area. We were greeted by very friendly and relaxed people who advised us what to do and where to go. After arming ourselves with a hot drink we sat ourselves at the Leeds and Wakefield allocated table in the room: Here we discovered we were the only young people’s group representing Leeds (which made us wondered where our Leeds Youth Parliament Members were?), the rest of the young people and facilitators on our table were based in Wakefield.

Discussing barriers young people face when accessing mental healthcare.

In those early minutes it soon became apparent that there were a lot of young people from around Yorkshire and Humberside, who had made the effort to give up their Saturdays and attend the event – this was so great to see! I would say that at least 70% of people attending were young people. And this made us realise that we are ‘not alone’ in our passion and fight for promoting positive messages on young people’s emotional and mental health!

The day progressed steadily with a variety of presentations from Clinical Commissioners, CAMHS and young people. My favourite bit was hearing from the young people and learning more about all the different ideas and projects each area is undertaking to raise this agenda with young people in their localities- it really was inspiring to hear from them all.

At lunch we ate by our Shout Out stall and chatted to those that came over to us about out campaign and work…many took our leaflets and business cards and said they would keep in touch.

The day ended with the room deciding to establish a young people’s group from across Yorkshire and Humberside to help keep communication open and keep everyone in formed of how the work and initiatives progress in each area.

It was a great event to take part in, and really inspiring and interesting to meet other young people from across our region.

Leeds Youth Summit

On Wednesday 30 March Shout Out Leeds attended the Youth Summit Event on Discrimination.

We took part in a 2 hour workshop aimed and finding out views, opinions and feelings of young people around the topic discrimination.

The evening was very interesting and we met lots of other young people from around Leeds.

In May 2016 the Leeds Voice and Influence Team will use the material from this workshop to talk to other young people from Leeds schools at one large event they are organising on tackling discrimination in young people.

Shout Out Invades York!

On Sunday, Shout Out hit York (accompanied by two very lovely little ones). Two of our members have written their accounts of the day, below.

On Sunday 21st February 2016 as members of Shout Out Leeds, we went in to York for a friendly gathering and to take a visit around the site. While we were in York we met up with York2Naomi and she toured us round the best bits of York. This was our first main meeting of the year after our brief meeting with the group at the Youth Parliament meeting during early January. While we met yesterday, we found out about some amazing events and projects that we are going to be involved with, while continuing with our campaign in to 2016. After a fantastic and tiring day we caught the train back to Leeds. We have decided that we are going to have monthly meetings in Leeds to keep up with our projects and also how to get involved with new projects.

On Sunday 21st February members of ShoutOut came together for a blustery day out in York. This was my first outing with the group, one which I was very much looking forward to. After making the short journey to York, we set out to explore the remarkable city with history adorning its streets.

Not long after departing from the station we were met by one of the three York bridges. Our location provided the group with a picturesque view of the river, in spite of evidence of the damage caused by the flooding, in the form of a felled tree at the riverside.

We ventured deeper into York taking in the sights and even taking a picture with a life-size teddy bear along the way! Not long after we were enticed by the offer of free fudge by Fudge York1Kitchen where our taste buds were treated to sea salt and caramel fudge and chocolate orange fudge. The group continued its journey deeper into York, whereby we were met by an eccentric street entertainer who may have let slip a profanity or two! Regardless of his summoning of individuals from the audience to assist him (we managed to escape their fate- phew!) his show was a joy to watch, especially since it was clear how much he enjoyed entertaining audiences for a living. We continued exploring York, had a lovely meal at the Slug and Lettuce, where we were joined by Naomi who resides in York. Whilst dining we had discussions on issues such as; the dissolution of the Leeds and York Partnership, dates and times most convenient for group consultations and the introduction of minute taking of meetings for absent ShoutOut members. The trip ended with a brief visit to York Cathedral and a group selfie on another of York’s bridges.

February – June 2015

Since February, we have been working alongside some Leeds Time to Change Ambassadors, with Year 3 Design students from Leeds Beckett University to create some new campaign tools and resources. The main aim of this was to create something which we could bring to councillors in Leeds in order to encourage them to increase the amount of funding they allocate to young people’s mental health within the city. The project is still underway but there are some very promising signs of an animation and a giant maze. Watch this space!
